8 • THE ARTISAN FALL 2018 to legislators, from officers in other locals and the International to the Women's Committee. Unfortunately, you don't just hand those things over to the next person in line, they must earn the trust of others and develop the office into their own. There is also a cautionary tale. America's current leadership has a real agenda to destroy our unions, and we must not give them holes to slither into. I recently participated in a webinar that would have made your hair curl, learning the tactics anti- union activists are attempting to infiltrate and destroy what we have worked so hard to achieve. We must be warriors and remain steadfast, upholding the rights we have gained. Learn to become strong and resilient, but learn to listen, learn and use wisdom. I could not have found a better career for myself than as a make-up artist. Who else would have paid me to go all over the world, fulfill my creative and artistic dreams, have a great time and work with some of the most wonderful people on the plan- et? I'll never forget the day I knocked on the door of Local 706 and was told I was not allowed to be a make-up artist because I was a woman. That actually happened. I will always be grateful to two make-up artists who encouraged me at that point, Dana Nye and Ken Wensevic. A few kind words from two men went a long way. Thanks to this union (and the producers who had to make all the benefits contributions), I can securely retire with a good pension, lifetime healthcare and a sizeable IAP. I worked very hard and now it's time to enjoy it. I've worked with some exceptional people on so many differ- ent levels. It has been my true honor to represent the make-up artists and hair stylists in our union. There are so many people to recognize and thank I cannot possibly name everyone because undoubtedly someone will be forgotten. You are all in my heart, but I must now let the next generation go ahead. Tommy and Randy—we truly have been an amazing team, each other's support (or critic, but never adversary) and best and dearest friends throughout this incredible journey. International President Matthew Loeb continues to inspire; Int'l Vice Presidents Mike Miller, Thom Davis and our Local 706 counsel Laurence Zakson have been my guides. John Jackson, Julie Socash, Linda Arnold, Vanessa Dionne, Kim Ferry, Sandy Rowden, the negotiations committees, the welfare committees, other Business Representatives and Officers from all over the United States and Canada—we have all learned from each other and I am eternally grateful. Local 706 has an office staff that truly is superior. Our little staff—Kathy, Diane, Linda and Hailey—work so hard and get so little appre- ciation. It is truly difficult to say goodbye, so I won't. I will be available if and when needed. I may have an adult beverage with a tiny umbrella and sand between my toes, and I will be smiling. Now I can finally have lunch with my retiree buddies. Make me proud. Sue CAbrAl-ebert President FROM THE PRESIDENT Continued from page 5
