Fall 2018
breathtaking landscapes to the
camera. When I am scouting,
I have an inner fear that the
'perfect' location has been
missed, urging me to drive
the extra mile, turn the distant
corner or crest the next hilltop
to discover the location we
require. It always amazes me
how the last location scouted
can be the location I have
been searching for.
A memorable example of
my internal drive was when
scouting for the house in
the recent BBC production
of Howard's End. I scouted
all day in Surrey, at the end
of the day, I passed a house
just as described to me by
the designer. The owner was
not home so I left a letter in
a milk bottle by one of the
seven outside doors. I believed
this could be the house for us
but dared not show it to the
yielded Tilbury Fort—a 17th-
century Napoleonic stronghold
on the banks of the Thames.
Hardly ever visited by the
public even though open daily,
it had some brick structures
we could work with and a
foreshore to a wide shallow
moat. A four-month hire of
this English Heritage site
required local council planning
permission to build the sets as
they could be seen from the
nearby road and the council
where worried locals would
think it was being developed
into housing! It was rewarding
to collaborate with a creative
team on many creative
challenges and overcome
them, my faith was being
restored as we filmed.
My love of this career has
always resided in scouting:
bringing properties, never-
seen-before interiors and
