For Members 20 SAG-AFTRA | Summer 2018 | sagaftra.org S AG-AFTRA continues to support the Music Modernization Act, which would update copyright laws for the digital era and will set the stage for improved royalty payments for artists. One component reforms streaming royalties and another provides federal copyright protection to artists for their pre-1972 songs. The bill was unanimously passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in April and passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 28. As of press time, the MMA was awaiting a vote of the full Senate and, if approved, it would go to the president for his signature. Members have been making their voices heard to elected officials and on social media. The union will continue to monitor this legislation and lobby for its passage. NARRATORS MEET IN N.Y. N arrators from all over the country gathered in the Ken Howard Boardroom in New York for the seventh annual SAG-AFTRA national audiobook narrator meeting on May 31, the day after the annual Audio Publishers Association Conference. Meeting attendees received a report on the successes of the last year, including a report from the leaders of the ListenUp bargaining unit on the multiyear organizing effort that resulted in a first contract effective Jan. 1, and saw a presentation on trends and earnings. They also participated in a lively discussion about priorities for the coming year. Carteris spoke about the importance of combatting the culture that enables harassment. The gathering featured a brunch and conversation with trailblazing women in the entertainment industry. It was hosted by Netflix and sponsored by SAG-AFTRA and Women In Film. INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris, below, addresses the Danish Actors' Association's member convention in Copenhagen on May 27. "International solidarity is crucial," said Carteris, in her speech to the convention. She also honored retiring President Katja Holm for her service.
